Dust / pollution protection
It helps filter out or reduce inhalation of dust, dirt, airborne particles, and pollutants while riding. Many bike masks advertise “air filter mesh” or anti‑pollution features.
Wind protection / reduced dryness
At high speeds, wind can dry out your skin, lips, and airway. A mask acts as a barrier, reducing wind chill on your face.
UV / sun protection
Many such masks are made with fabrics offering UV protection (or at least blocking direct sunlight) to prevent sunburn or skin damage on exposed facial areas.
Cold / temperature regulation
In cooler or windy weather, the mask helps retain some warmth around the face and neck. In some designs, the material is breathable so it doesn’t overly trap heat in warmer weather.
Comfort under helmet
The mask can act as a liner under your helmet, helping to absorb sweat and reduce direct contact of hard helmet straps/linings on skin. Many are designed to be worn beneath helmets comfortably.
Versatility / multi-function use
These masks often are flexible in how they can be worn — full face, half face, neck gaiter, or balaclava styles.
