J. Kottalam is retired after serving in the scientific and technological research and development fields. He was born in 1954 in Kotkai of southern Tamilnadu in India. Having received MSc from Indian Institute of Technology at Madras and PhD from Michigan State University in USA, he worked at institutions such as University of California at San Diego, Scripps Research Institute, Harvard University and Cray Research with scholars including Nobel laureate Martin Karplus. He contributed to developing numerical algorithms for simulating the structures and dynamics of macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids in supercomputers. His further contributions are in the fields of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Statistical Physics. Now he is engaged in bringing the scientific wealth available in English to Tamil in a planned systematic manner.
