    Summary of the Book

Set against the backdrop of a peaceful southern town in Alabama, this is a classic novel of childhood and the crisis of conscience. Scout Finch is a six year old girl who lives with her older brother Jem and their widowed father, Atticus, in Maycomb, Alabama. Jem and Scout meet a young boy named Dill who comes to Maycomb to live with his aunt each summer. The three children become fast friends. Atticus is called to serve as the defending attorney in a case against a black man who allegedly raped a young white woman. The events of the trial, and the children’s experiences during them form the rest of the novel which has since become a classic American novel known for its style and literary significance.
