  • Description
Inspiring, moving and mercurial, The Last Gambit is Paul Coelho crossed with a coming-of-age tale in a uniquely Indian context. 'Success by design is infinitely better than a win by chance.' Vasu Bhatt is fourteen years old when a mysterious old man spots him at a chess tournament and offers to coach him, on two simple but strange conditions: he would not accompany his student to tournaments, and there was to be no digging into his past. Initially resentful, Vasu begins to gradually understand his master's mettle. Over eight years, master and student come to love and respect each other, but the two conditions remain unbroken - until Vasu confronts and provokes the old man. Meanwhile, their hard work and strategy pay off: Vasu qualifies for the World Chess Championship. But can he make it all the way without his master by his side? Inspiring, moving and mercurial, The Last Gambit is a beautiful coming-of-age tale in a uniquely Indian context.

One of the most inspiring books out there!

Gripping from the first word till the very last, it is an absolute unputdownable book.

Though based on Chess, it is a book for anyone who is looking for an inspiring, thrilling and engrossing read with a meaning. Meaning because it is set up in the most real,
believable of backgrounds. It is a fiction but feels like a story close to home.

The author offers a perfect balance between the technical aspect of the game and the lows and highs in the protaganist, Vasu's life. Such vivid portrayal ...

This is such a wonderful book. Simple yet beautiful story with not much chess jargon and was easy to understand. The middle class lives described by author makes you feel connected. "Success by design is infinitely better than win by chance."

    Brilliantly Real Fiction

The last Gambit - Work of Fiction so adeptly woven with strands of wisdom for the challenges which a regular teenager face in his/her life. This is the first time i am reading a work of fiction by a monk, you don't expect someone going in a robe to write work of fiction. Then the Author is not just any monk which shows from the other works he has written. Other than how to pursue your dreams relentlessly the author has emphasized on how much the parents sacrifice for their children to make th...

    Mind-blowing purchase

Its a fiction..but i felt that author has written his own teenage experiences here...i could connect with the protagonist...
The story is gud..touching and my emotions emerged on many places...i remembered by own teenage and my own old guruji at that time...i could relate with the story...
The only thing that i could not connect was the chess terminology and technical aspects of this game...overall i love to read it again some day when i feel like...its a touching and inspiring story..

it will take you on a ride of Life - yes Life !

The moment I started reading the book, just about all the characters came alive. I am so sure that like me there are many others who can literally see 'who is playing who' in this story.

What can I say either about Vasu or his Master, at times the boundaries of distinction disappeared for me - glimpses of Master in Vasu and Vasu in his Master. Perhaps that is what a True Master means, perhaps that what the Master Author here indicates - the disciple needs to work upon himself/herself to the ...
