Summary of the Book

Jean Valjean began as a thief with no morals. His life was a constant quest for getting what he wanted, no matter what the means. To that cause he even robbed a pastor. When he was caught, he never thought that the pastor would forgive him, let alone tell him that the things he stole were his to keep. Years later, he is a changed man, trying to live according to a path the pastor would have encouraged. A mayor now, he goes out of his way to help people in need. He will do anything to help them and to secure their happiness. However, his past is not so easily forgotten. Inspector Javert, who was an adjutant guard at the Bagne of Toulon during Valjean's incarceration, has always been suspicious of the mayor and thinks he might know who he is. When a young lady of incredibly bad luck comes to their attention, Javert and Valjean are again drawn close, close enough for Javert to make the deadly accusation. Can Jean Valjean escape his past? Or will he be forced to pay for sins he has long since paid for?
