Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Iyengar Narayan (R.K. Narayan) was a prominent Indo-Anglican writer. His first novel was 'Swami and His Friends', published in 1935. He has written fourteen novels and many short stories set in the fictional village of 'Malgudi' and its people. His famous novels include 'The Dark Room', 'The Guide', 'The Bachelor of Arts' and 'The Man Eater of Malgudi'. He has published more than twenty-five works in the genres of novels, short stories, memoirs, travelogues and retellings of epic and mythological stories. 'The Guide' won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1960. Nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1989, R.K. Narayan was awarded the Padma Bhushan (1964) and Padma Vibhushan (2000). He passed away on 13 May 2001.
