  • Description
This is the Merlin Unwin Books edition and is the only one currently available which contains the iconic Raymond Sheppard illustrations which capture with remarkable verve and accuracy the dramatic highlight of each story. All royalties from the sale of the Merlin Unwin Books hardback edition go to the Corbett tiger reserve in India. The presence of a man-eating tiger in the Indian province of Naini Tal spread fear and panic throughout the impoverished rural community. This tigress had already killed 434 villagers by the time Jim Corbett was approached to track and despatch her in 1907. These thrilling and moving tales are Corbett's first-hand accounts as, over the ensuing 29 years and at the request of desperate locals, he expertly tracks and kills various specific tigers and leopards which had become man-eaters, driven to this by injury or extreme old age. No one understood the ways of the Indian jungle better than Corbett. A skilled tracker, he preferred to hunt alone and on foot, sometimes accompanied by his small dog Robin. Corbett derived intense happiness from observing wildlife and he was a fervent conservationist as well as a tracker and ace shot. He empathised with the impoverished people amongst whom he lived, in what is today Uttarakhand, and he established India's first tiger sanctuary there. Corbett's writing is as immediate and accessible today as it was when first published in 1944.

    Classy product

Awesome . Delivery is too slow ...... Pictures are outstanding and looks very original .....Jim Corbett was every inch a hero, something like a "sahib" . He was expert in the ways of the jungle, fearless in the pursuit of man-eating big cats, and above all a crack shot. Brought up on a hill-station in north-west India, he killed his first leopard before he was nine and went on to achieve a legendary reputation as a hunter.
Corbett was also an author of great renown. His books on the man-e...

    A true thriller

This is the book that one should read, store and tell tales from! Wonderfully narrated by Jim, it felt like I was watching a thriller movie. Jim's view of nature and tigers are a lesson too. I wonder whether anybody tried making a movie based on Jim's stories! It would be grand success for sure.

Great Book by the Great person

I read in 1994, though I heard about this classic recommended by Mr. Arjun Singh one of the prominent wildlife experts during late 1980s, and had thought what would be interesting in a book written about man eaters. But when I came across the book after that, I wondered reading the book. I can't describe the greatness of the Author and Book with my limited English knowledge, but I can honestly tell that this is one of the greatest books I have ever read in my life.

    great book

This book takes into account the man eaters and how Jim shot them one after another. The description is amazing as usual and takes one in the same phase as he is. If one really reads it thoroughly, one can actually feel the excitement in nerves.

Coupled together with the amazing description of the hunts and humor that he puts in the stories, this is all in all a very good book.

    Cheers to Jim!!!!!!!

The perfect book if you love action , guns , hunting and the perfect details of old India.
Jim have perfectly explained the situation in which a tiger or a leapord turned into a man eater.

Since I'm into gun business the details of his firearms gave me a new idea about hunting arms.
