  • Description

The aim of this book is to explain, carefully but not technically, the differences between advanced, research-level mathematics, and the sort of mathematics we learn at school. The most fundamental differences are philosophical, and readers of this book will emerge with a clearer understanding of paradoxical-sounding concepts such as infinity, curved space, and imaginary numbers. The first few chapters are about general aspects of mathematical thought. These are followed by discussions of more specific topics, and the book closes with a chapter answering common sociological questions about the mathematical community (such as "Is it true that mathematicians burn out at the age of 25?") It is the ideal introduction for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of mathematics.

    Salient Features

    • A concise explanation of the differences between advanced mathematics and what we learn at school
    • Offers the reader an insight into such seemingly paradoxical concepts as infinity, the square root of minus one, and curved space
    • Tackles the sociological questions that arise regarding the mathematical community - e.g. 'Do mathematicians burn out at the age of 25?'
    • Clear and non-technical language throughout
    • The author received the Fields Medal for Mathematics in 2000, awarded for 'the most daring, profound and stimulating research done by young mathematicians'

    Good introduction to the topic

    The content:
A very short book, it has 8 chapters in total ranging from topics of mathematical models, abstraction, proofs, geometry etc to the final chapter which is a FAQ about frequent questions about mathematics.
If you have done mathematics beyond your high school, then probably there is nothing in this book that you don't know. It's more of a book for laymens or school kids who can get some philosophical thinking going about mathematics. But being a short read (hardly an hour or so), e...

Excellent book to understand the 'philosophy' of mathematics

This book and other titles in the VSI series by OUP are great guide for beginners. They create an interest in the reader. Coupled with a sizeable bibliography its a good sounding board to carry on further reading.

Mathematics, A Very short introduction, introduces to basic concepts of Mathematics right from Euclid's time to present day developments. It talks of our conception of space, time and dimensions in a very simple manner.

    Great read.

    Good prelude to the basics

This book brushes your school mathematics with few additional topics like " Mathematical Model " and " Dimension". Other than that, i don't think a general reader can get something more out of it. A mathematician may found it interesting just like revising school books.
