Description

Gilled, in shelflike clusters; broad, fleshy, whitish, grayish, or tan cap; stubby, off-center stalk. Grows on stumps, logs, and trunks of deciduous trees. Year-round. Cap shell-shaped, semicircular to elongated; margin is smooth, sometimes wavy; whitish to grayish to tan; texture velvety; flesh is thick, white.

Soil Nutrient Requirements	There species grow wild in the forests which can be cultivated in thatched, polythene, brick or stone houses. Oyster mushroom can be grown on various substrates viz., paddy straw, maize stalks/cobs, vegetable plant residues etc.
Sowing Method	In this method pre-wetted straw is packed in wooden trays or boxes and then kept in a pasteurization room at 60-80C for few hours. Temperature of the pasteurization room is manipulated with the help of steam through a boiler. Substrate after cooling at room temperature is seeded with spawn.

Care Instructions	Mushrooms grow in a temperature range of 20°-33° C. Relative humidity is maintained by spraying water twice a day on the walls and floor of the room. Spraying of blocks should be avoided for the first 2-3 days. A light mist spray of water is given on blocks as soon as the small pin heads appear.
Other Features	Mushrooms are rich in selenium, vitamin D and vitamin B6. Selenium helps prevent cell damage in our body, vitamin D helps in cell growth and vitamin B6 helps our body to form red blood cells. All these nutrients in mushrooms help maintain a healthy immune system.
