  • Description
A hydelpower project in the remote Himalayas. Three people brought together by fate. Nanda, an engineer from Kerala at the dam construction site hiding from his past, from the law, torn between the love of his dear ones and the traditional kalari code of revenge. Khusru, a boy displaced from his native village in Kashmir, a gambit in the terror plot threatening to blow up the dam, working as a labourer at the site. Rekha, a Kathak dancer in heart, a doctor by profession, arrives at the campsite as the consort of Khusru. A village that accepts the dictates of modernity with a heavy heart, its population steeped in superstitions and religious beliefs.

All throng the campsite like moths to a flame, some escape untouched, successful, some, miss a step, and perish. Each has a story to tell and a dream to realise. Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar is about the aspirations of these people with their cares and worries woven into the site life. The fury of nature and the hardships of project life have no mercy for the weak and no time for the dead. Like an eternal spectator the Dhauladhar watches as men risk life and limb in a quest to fulfill their dreams.

    A Solid Debut

Kochery C. Shibu's Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar is a work of great promise and yet somewhat unfulfilled potential. At times, you're completely hooked, lost in the proceedings while brimming with intrigue, in this tale of intertwined destinies of characters you feel you're almost on the verge of caring about. Yet, the narrative is interspersed with stretches where the author's meticulous attention to detail becomes a double-edged sword and mars the novel's pacing. There's no technical faul...

    OK

First of all, thanks to the author for sending me this book for free.
Fiction doesn't appeal to me much,so I may be one of the harshest critics.
Basically its a story about construction of a dam and various characters involved.
After reading a few pages,it becomes evident that its a debut novel. There are a few inconsistencies in writing like excessive use of italics, pronouns are not used and some characters are not introduced properly.Half of the book's pages are introducing character after ch...

A poetic book that would win your hearts

This is definitely one of the best books that have been published by new authors of Indian origins.
The story line is quite complex and the writing style, although poetic, might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But for me, the different writing style and the way the whole story was presented added to the allure of the book.
The best part of the book was its characters. I loved how the author gave out information and history of the characters between the story. Not only did it provide an intere...

This has been one of the best books i read this year , The language , the content , story line, the way of describing things was very prolific & engaging , doesn't feel like a book by a debut author at any point .The characterisation was very detailed and i could feel the pains and pleasure so vividly. Good book. Must read once!

Enjoyed reading the book “Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar”. All character and places are very well articulated. I flipped through the pages and finished reading the book in go. But thoughts of the mountain and people depicted in the story still lingers. Good for a light read.

    Decent product

The main characters of the story are Nanda and Khushru. Nanda hails from a village in Kerala , is well versed in Kalari ,absconds himself from the people who seeks his death and joins the Hydel project in Dhauladhar project for refuge. Khushru a handsome lad who is a mere puppet in the hands of a terrorist gang leads a insensitive life and later finds love of his life,Rekha . Apart from the main plot there are several other sub plots with many characters from different diversities. The lives...

Review I am thankful to Shibu for offering me the book to review it.

Shibu's book is a delightful read. Pretty much enjoyable.
Khusru, Rekha, Nandu, Nandinikutty, Vijay. Too many characters from different backgrounds. Good to know about our diversified cultures through the characters. Very neatly sketched. Still can't believe this is the first book by the author.

The downside of the book is the narration of dam construction is too technical. At few moments, it's...

    A good debut novel !!

Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar was sent to me for an honest review by Kochery C Shibu for his debut novel. It is always exciting to read Indian authors and the same excitement was there when I got an offer to review the book. The book is easy to read with a smooth flow and gives a flavor of different regions of India and across the borders. A detailed background description of the main protagonists of the novel was interestingly done and enlightening. Some parts of the novel dragged on a bi...

Hydro Project Life and the nuances

The novel is well researched and a near life account of a Hydro electric project site. Shibu manages to make you feel as if you are there witnessing the flash floods and land slides and the agony and the sufferings. The novel also gives a glimpse into what it was like for some one who has taken the path of the gun by mistake and trying to get back in to life. The compulsions of the kalari code and aspirations of love all entangled in a project life. This book is raw and powerful and may not s...

The novel leaves the reader more questions than answers

    a. Can the contractors at a work site be so insensitive to human life.
    b. Is the value system in the project sites so different for one to understand.
    c. Would I dare to put myself to through such a life.
    d. Would some one still believe in kalari code of conduct even in this day and age.
    e. Can some one as accomplished like Rekha ever fall in love with a teenage terrorist like Khusru
Men and Dreams in the Dhauladharhas a way of getting to you even before you realiseit.
    A ...
