The Menagerie and Other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries is an extraordinary collection of some of the best suspense thrillers featuring Byomkesh Bakshi, authored by well-known Bengali author, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.

    Summary of the Book

Byomkesh Bakshi is considered to be one of the most popular and enduring creations in Bengali literature. The adventures of Byomkesh Bakshi are largely based on such greats as Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Chesterton’s Father Brown. Bakshi’s appeal as the self-styled investigator, a detective not by profession but by passion, found him a huge and dedicated fan following among generations of readers. This collection of stories, all set in Calcutta of 50’s and 60’s, brings forth four nail-biting mysteries featuring the ace detective – The Menagerie, The Jewel Case, The Will That Vanished, and The Quills of the Porcupine. Brilliantly translated by Sreejata Guha, this book will make for an enthralling and riveting read for all crime fiction enthusiasts.

    A must read!

4 mysteries are covered in the book, namely: The Menagerie (Chidiyakhana), The Jewel Case (Monimondon), The Will That Vanished (Khunji Khunji Nari) and The Quills of the Porcupine (Shajarur Kanta). The cases are not in any order but this does not hamper the entertainment value in the least.

The English translation by Sreejata Guha is skillfully done and she manages to capture the essence of Bengal in the year range of 1953 to 67. Her descriptions create a mental picture of that time when lif...

    Great read

First off, Sreejata Guha - take a bow! As the translator of this book, you've done a lot of English readers great service. You've not only captured the original beautifully, you've also added to it.

This is a set of stories (his last few, I believe) of which "The Menagerie" stands out. The characters and the manner in which they are delineated with all the flourishes of those times were very enjoyable. The language is very accessible and people of all ages will love it.

    I got interested i...

    What a suspense!!

The first story was long and wonderful. And then the two small stories were also great.
The last one was a bit different from others. But as wonderful as the other.
It is worth the money. The quality of the pages is also good. Very light weight to hold and read while on bed.

The first story "The Menagerie" is the highlight!!!

I am a big fan of Byomkesh Bakshi mysteries. The precise reason why I ordered this book. It definitely was up to my expectations. A must read for Byomkesh fans! The first story is the best among all. It has all the elements of a killer detective story; murders, strange happenings, an intriguing sub-plot and finally a jaw-dropping climax. It one weekend of Byomkesh Bakshi mysteries bound and packed in one book! Go ahead, order it and you won't be disappointed!!

    Byomkesh - da?

I had read some of the Byomkesh Nakshi stories in my youth - in te original Bengali, in Delhi, at the Durga Puja my parents went to and I suppose I've reached the age where one is nostalgic about such things. Still, I needed the English version (as my always limited abilities at written Bengali have become worse over the years) and Flipkart delivered me two against two orders made about six months. This particular one is well written - well written in English, I meant to say. And I believe i...

    Engrossing fine collection

Having seen bits and pieces of the TV serial in the 1990s I was intrigued by the original source. I am glad that I purchased this collection. EVen though "detective conventions" are fulfilled - a Holmes MUST have a Watson - the Indian and specially Bengali flavor of the stories is remarkably maintained and this is thoroughly enjoyable .

A must read for all fans of detective stories and of course Indian literature.
