very good book

i dont know about the other reviewers but this is a really good book . All the top universities follow sakurai because of his presentation of topics and the logical deductive-ness approach that he follows , from experimental analysis to theoretical implications and further application s of those theory thats how he does it. The notation is not that diffucult to understand because its very intuitive must buy for all aspiring physicists...

An absolute must for a Physics major. Not very understandable in the first reading, but there could be no better text on QM than Sakurai at this level.

Good but needs time to get up with...

In my Ph.D course work, the course instructor is following this book. He asked us to solve all the problems of first 2 chapters for the Mid-sem exam...And It was kind of a DISASTER !!!!!!. The book is good but one should spend a quality time with it to get up with. Recommended STRICTLY for advanced level students.....not for beginners of QM.

Too much bang for the buck

Sakurai's Modern Quantum Mechanics feels and reads like a hurriedly patched together set of lecture notes with no continuity, no thought for pedagogy, super-large sized chapters and covering topics that are totally off-track for the chapter in question.

Just to take an example - Sakurai has a gigantic chapter on Angular Momentum (chap 3) which rambles on for about hundred pages and has sections on Density Matrix formalism and Bell's Inequality - which are not topics that you'd expect in suc...
