Published in the year 2012, Mohammed Rafi is a documentary on the life of one of the most renowned singers in the Indian film industry, Mohammed Rafi.

    Summary Of The Book

Mohammed Rafi is a detailed account of the life of one of the greatest singers in history, Mohammed Rafi, who sang around 4,500 songs through the course of his 35 year long career as a singer. This book is written by his daughter-in-law, Yasmin Khalid Rafi, who, after the passing away of her husband, decided to write a book on her father-in-law to tell the coming generations in her family about Mohammed Rafi, as well as die-hard fans of this renowned singer worldwide.

Naushad Ali, who was a famous music director, called Mohammed Rafi the new Tansen of India. Through the course of his vast career, Rafi worked with the most renowned music directors of those times, which include Shankar Jaikishen, O. P. Nayyar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and S. D. Burman. He was best-known for his romantic songs. However, he also possessed the uncanny ability to sing songs in a number of styles, which include classical songs, ghazals, bhajans, and qawwalis. During the peak of his career, Rafi was the voice behind most actors, including Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dharmendra.

Yasmin recounts the time she was an ardent fan of Rafi during the 70s, not knowing that one day she would end up being a part of his family after marrying his son, Khalid. For his fans across the world, Rafi was a music icon. However, for his family, he was a simple and caring man, who enjoyed simple things in life, such as flying kites with his kids, driving his green Fiat, and eating good food. Even after his death in 1980, Rafi is remembered by millions worldwide for his hit songs, some of which include Yeh Zindagi ke Meley, Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki, and Duniya ke Rakhwaley. The Indian Government presented him with the fourth highest civilian award, which is the Padma Shri, and he has also been awarded six Filmfare awards.

Fantastic account of Rafi Saab's life.

This is a very well written account of Rafi Saab's life. I had read hindi version earlier, but this one is by far the best biographical account. Many unknown facts about him were very well captured in the book. Few

    0) His first public performance in presence of K.L. Saigal
    1) His love for cars, food...
    2) His overly generous nature. Many such accounts are covered in the book.
    3) Picture with Mohammad Ali (must see)
    4) Invitation from Jawaharlal Nehru
    5) His fan following in Westindies and ...

    The story behind the man!

Any Indian who grew up before the 1990's would have done so on a diet of Rafi songs. Sadly there is little quality stuff written on the man. This book fills the gap admirably, written by his daughter-in-law and translated in to English. There are of course gaps and one would have loved to hear of the great singer's views, likes & dislikes. At some places the text gets down to merely listing songs, but overall despite this is a good read.

I was expecting a great deal of information on one of India's Finest Singer Ever but unfortunately, this book ended up as a disappointment. Except for First and the Last Chapters, all the chapters in between contain useless information about the life of the Author as to When and Where she was born, brought up and all about her parents, her family and her lifestyle and her love of movies and troubles etc. etc. which is irritating to read. WHO THE HELL IS INTERESTED ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S LIFE?? We...
