City of Bones is the first part in Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments young-adult fantasy fiction series.

Summary of the Book

Clary Fray didn’t expect to witness a murder. She certainly didn’t expect it to happen at the Pandemonium Club right in New York City. The killers are three teenagers, their bodies are covered in strange tattoos and they wield even stranger weapons. The body vanishes, leaving Clary with a bunch of questions she has no answers for. When her mother disappears, she begins hunting for her and this leads her to a New York she cannot recognize. It is filled with wild warlocks, hidden faeries, rabid werewolves and demons. These creatures are hankering after the destruction of Downworld, this secret land beneath NYC. She runs into a mysterious demon hunter called Jace, one of the Shadowhunters. Clary joins the Nephilim, the cult of demon hunters and begins to understand her own powers. She needs to master them in time if she’s going to save her mother. However, the cost might be larger than she is willing to pay.
