Summary of the Book

This is the story of two soldiers. Sam Damon holds duty, honour and his men above his own interests. Courtney Massengale is only interested in the progress of his own military career. He works towards making the right connections to build his career and advance in rank. Beginning with Sam’s posting in Nebraska and Damon’s posting in the south of the border during the Mexican expedition, this book brings these two characters together, their conflicting ideals collide and they will decide their fates for themselves.

Anton Myrer was a United States Marine Corps veteran and writer of war novels. He has also written The Big War, The Last Convertible, The Tiger Waits and A Green Desire.

This book was adapted into a nine hour American television mini-series by NBC. It was directed by Richard Michaels and E. W. Swackhamer. It starred Sam Elliot as Damon, with Cliff Potts portraying Courtney Massengale.
