Other Backward Classes (OBC) in India constitute a diverse group of socially and educationally
disadvantaged communities identified by the government for affirmative action to promote social equity
and inclusion. The recognition of OBCs is rooted in efforts to address historical injustices and socioeconomic
disparities that have hindered their progress. The Mandal Commission's recommendations in
the late 20th century marked a significant milestone in acknowledging the need for reservations in
education and public sector employment for OBCs. This led to a constitutional amendment and the
implementation of a 27% reservation quota for OBCs in these sectors. Despite these measures, many
OBC communities continue to face challenges such as limited access to quality education, healthcare,
and economic opportunities. Efforts to uplift OBCs involve not only reservations but also targeted
schemes and policies aimed at improving their overall well-being and social mobility. The ongoing
discourse around OBC reservations and their impact reflects the dynamic nature of India's journey
towards social justice and equality.
