The Overcoat And Other Short Stories 1st Edition includes the masterpiece The Overcoat, the satirical The Nose, the humourous The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarrelled with Ivan Nikiforovich, and the rustic Old-Fashioned Farmers.

    Summary Of The Book

The Overcoat And Other Short Stories 1st Edition is a collection of four literary pieces by the author. The Overcoat, published in 1842, shows the life of a poor St. Petersburg official whose valuable coat has gone missing. It highlights his struggles, pain, frustration, and setbacks as he tries to recover his belongings. This masterpiece has had great influence on Russian literature. This story has been adapted into ballets, plays, films, and radio shows.

The next is The Nose, an appropriate title for a satirical story that sheds light on the snootiness of Russia's rich but incompetent upper class. The tale in divided into three parts, and describes the experiences of Major Kovalyov’s nose, after getting separated from its owner.
The third story is The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarrelled with Ivan Nikiforovich. It is also known as The Squabble in English. One of the most humourous stories ever written by Gogol, this tale is about two Ivans who are great friends and neighbours. However, one day they both end up insulting each other which results in a feud.

The last story in the collection is Old-Fashioned Farmer. It depicts the life on an old couple who have isolated themselves from society and live in rural seclusion.

An enchanting story but difficulty with the paper quality

This is a collection of stories from Gogol. But I bought it to read The Overcoat. The story was amazing and is one of the earliest of the character study format of stories. Gogol is a fore runner for even Doestovsky and many other writers of the world. the story was originally writtern in a local slang of Russian, which made its translation to English very difficult and unfulfilling. But still it doesn't distract you.

What made difficult for me is the quality of this book print and the ille...

    Only four??

    This is a good buy.
I read The Namesake and wanted to find out what the big deal about The Overcoat was. So looked for it and decided to go for a collection on short stories. But it is a collection of only four of his books :/
Anyway, its a good condensation by Dover publications.
