About P. Padmarajan
P. Padmarajan was a renowned Indian filmmaker and writer. Other books by this author include Itha Ivide Vare, Manju Kaalam Notta Kuthira, Jalajwala, Nanmakalude Sooryan, Nakshathrangale Kaaval, and Onnu Randu Moonnu. His writing is known for its realism and detail.
Padmarajan was born in 1946 in Alappuzha, Kerala. After earning a degree in Chemistry from University College, Trivandrum, he learnt Sanskrit from the Sanskrit scholar Cheppad Achyutha Warrier. While Padmarajan was working for All India Radio, he also wrote many novels and short stories, which were highly appreciated. His novel Nakshathrangale Kaval won him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. Padmarajan entered the Malayalam film industry as the screenplay writer for the popular director Bharathan’s debut movie Prayaanam. Soon, he began directing films from his own screenplays and became known for his experimental approach to filmmaking as well as his choice of unique themes. Padmarajan’s films were popular both among the critics and the common movie-going audiences. They won him many awards, including the 1982 Best Film and Best Script awards at the Kuala Lumpur Film Festival. Padmarajan also won the 1988 Filmfare Award for Best Director, for his film Aparan. His untimely death in 1991 was much mourned across Kerala.
