K. Narayan's The Painter of Signs is a wonderful work of literature as it evokes the emotions of love and deplores the evils that have afflicted the society. A Calligraphic artist fails to get recognition partly due to people's ignorance of the art and partly due to his poverty which forces him to become a painter of signs or signboards. The artist in him is insulted by such a petty trader as a bangle-seller. The poor-artist is obliged to concur with a tax evader against his conscience. Contents: Life and Works of R. K.
