  • Description

Paradise Lost is commended as one of John Milton’s all-time exceptional works. It powerfully recites the story of mankind through Milton’s standpoint, and discusses man’s disobedience to God and the resulting fall from grace. It is the story of the paradise being lost as a penalty for yielding to the lures twisted by Satan.

    Summary of the Book

Paradise Lost is completely written in blank verse; and is hailed as one of poetry’s greatest masterpieces ever compiled. An epic biblical poem of astonishing enormities, it is composed in twelve parts, and narrated from the perspective of the lead character Satan - Lucifer. Lucifer, one of the fallen angels, was exiled from heaven and was sent to hell for rebelling God’s willpower. When he comes to know of Man’s creation, he plans to allure him. He takes help from others, including Chaos. In the Garden of Eden, Satan, who has camouflaged as a serpent, cajoles Eve into consuming the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Adam follows intentionally, after knowing that Eve committed the sin as he is dedicated to her and decides to face the punishment alongside her. And though they plead for forgiveness of God later, they are cast out of Eden. Jesus agrees to give up his own life as a form of price for their sins, to redeem mankind. Milton’s Paradise Lost is a first of its kind elucidation of this biblical story, Adam and Eve's naive submission to the Satan and their subsequent expulsion from paradise.

    About John Milton

John Milton was a legendary scholar and English poet of the seventeenth century. He is a prominent literary figure in the Western world. Considered as one of the greatest non-dramatic poets from the times of Renaissance, Milton’s works reflect the political and other fiery issues that persisted in his time. His firm beliefs relating to freedom, including free speech, freedom of the press, and radical thought are the significant patterns contained in his works. He was born in the year 1608 to a wealthy family based in London. Milton was adept at many foreign languages including Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the reputed Cambridge University. Milton's debut work was Lycidas. He penned the biblical epic poem Paradise Lost in the year 1667. He went totally blind when he was 43, and created most of his works when he fought acute ill health. He strenuously dictated his works to secretaries who typed and composed his works for him. John Milton passed away in 1674. Some of his notable works include Samson Agonistes, Pastoral, Paradise Regained, and Areopagitica.

    A Must Have

Paradise Lost is a poem of epic proportions.
The language however is a bit difficult to understand for the naive reader. This edition with a brilliant introduction and a chapter-wise summary at the end makes it easier for the reader to comprehend. I would really recommend this!
