The Passionate Programmer: Creating A Remarkable Career In Software Development is a guide for software professionals. It shows how to be successful in the highly competitive world of software development.

    Summary Of The Book

The world at this stage is run by digital systems and the programs that control them. People who develop software for many kinds of applications are in high demand. At the same time, it is a fast changing world, where the careless can get left behind easily.

While software development can be a rewarding career, it takes a lot to stay on the job, to stay competitive enough to be considered a good programmer who is valued by the organization. The author of this book provides a manual on just how programmers can create a great career for themselves.

The Passionate Programmer: Creating A Remarkable Career In Software Development says that a person who wants to have a good career in this industry should treat it as a business venture. They should choose the market, invest, execute, and stay competitive.

This business analogy works well, for the programmer first has to identify their own interest and find a matching business need. For instance, choose a development platform that they like and one that is also in high demand. Then, invest time and effort in making themselves adept at using that technology. The person then has to stay focused on the job, assess their abilities to take on particular tasks, finish tasks on time, and be willing to learn from failures. Once a person is confident enough of their skills and experience, they can proceed to the next step, marketing.
They should highlight the benefits they can bring to the team, talk about their strengths. They should also stay in the focus of the industry by writing articles, setting up blogs and updating them regularly and participating in technology forums.

The final step is maintaining the edge. Software professionals always needs to be on their toes. It is a highly dynamic and fast changing industry, as technology evolves, new versions are released, and paradigm shifts occur. They need to keep updating their skills and not get into a rut or start feeling complacent.

The Passionate Programmer: Creating A Remarkable Career In Software Development thus provides a blueprint for success for the serious software professional. It shows them how to create a great career for themselves in this volatile industry of keen competition and rapid changes.

    Amazing

This is more of a 'life skills' or 'survival guide' for the
software industry. A very well written and fun-to-read book. If you are passionate about your job the you'll love this book.
After knowing that this is the 'next' edition of the book:
"My job went to India: and all I got was this lousy book", I was a
bit set aback and intimidated, but, Chad is not criticizing anyone/anything. Its worth reading, filled with lot of personal experiences.

    Must read for developers

A really good book and a must read for developers.
    - Short chapters.
    - Each chapter followed by tips to implement the ideas
    - Simple language.

I find the structure of the book to be somewhat inspired by "Eat that frog- 21 ways to stop procrastinating"
