Nanofiltration membranes are very similar to RO membranes, but they have larger pores. Its larger pores result in a lower reduction in TDS, so it is considered an excellent choice for low TDS feed water (<1200). Regular RO membranes, on the other hand, remove up to 98% of TDS from water. In areas with low TDS, RO can actually demineralize water to as low as 20 TDS. Such demineralised water is not fit for drinking purposes as it lacks several essential minerals that our body needs. According to WHO, drinking demineralized water over a long duration can cause several health issues like - Cardiovascular diseases, pregnancy disorders, certain kinds of cancers and weak bones. NF membranes can be chosen as per your input TDS with TDS reduction ranging from 20% to 80%. They also waste less water and consume less energy.
