From Plassey To Partition: A History of Modern India is a historical account of the British Empire in India, the Partition in 1947, and how India gained her independence.

    Summary Of The Book

From Plassey To Partition: A History of Modern India begins with the disintegration and downfall of the Mughal Empire and the parallel rise of the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent. The book offers an insight into the minds of the Indians under the British rule and their struggle for freedom as it gained ground after the Rising of 1857. The book is unique in its approach towards presenting the problems of Indians under the British rule. It gives a detailed account of their conflicts, cultural and social changes, their fight for freedom and the acceptance and adaptation to modernism brought in by the foreign rulers. From Plassey To Partition: A History Of Modern India presents the entire history of the British dominion over India through the various struggles and rebellions of the Indians, the rise of Indian leaders and politics, the Partition that led to the creation of Pakistan and finally, Independent India.

The entire account has been presented in a unique way by Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, who has provided the readers with different perspectives and sides to the entire struggle for Indian freedom. The book is divided into eight parts, which are British Empire in India, Emergence of Indian Nationalism, Transition of the Eighteenth Century, Early Indian Responses, Early Nationalism, Many Voices of a Nation, The Age of Gandhian Politics, and Freedom with Partition. The book also provides 5 maps of India at various times to offer a better understanding of the geography of the time. From Plassey To Partition: A History Of Modern India is suitable for both history students and interested readers, owing to its detailed presentation of the historical facts and events of that time period.

    NOT for GS Mains History

I bought this book looking at the great reviews people have written for it for UPSC exam. However it was a big disappointment! -

    a. The book does not cover facts and concepts clearly. Only passing reference.

    b. The book is of a higher level than required for GS Mains.

    c. The analysis in the book which people are drooling over is so intellectual that it is wholly unnecessary for atleast GS!

A person who does not have a background in history will struggle with this book. You dont need to...

    Not good for UPSC preparation

I bought this book about 3 months ago from Flipkart. My main purpose for purchasing this book was to help with my UPSC - civil service preparation. I started reading this book around 2 days ago and found out this book does not serve my purpose . I have only read around 80 pages or something . The content of the book seems to be more of a review of what each historian had to say about a particular event rather than explaining these events in a detailed sequential manner. Therefore a lot of tim...

A must have for history students

This and its translations, remains one of the most useful books for any serious student of modern history. While remaining accessible to the average reader, including school children, it covers the basic views of the important schools of historiography. I personally used this for a crash course before any competitive examination, apart from using it as the basic book for any topic taught in BA (for MA a little more detail is needed, but then this wasn't written for that level)

    And as things ...

Scholarly and extensively well researched! I loved the author's elaboration and reasoning to place things in perspective. Topics are logically ordered - pleasing to a reader's mind! I'm the 12th person to rate it 5. Brilliant history both of and in the book!!
