Poverty and Famines 1st Edition 1st Edition (English, Paperback, SEN AMARTYA)
This study was undertaken for the World Employment Pro-gramme launched by the International Labour Organization in 1969. It is concerned with the causation of starvation in general and of famines in particular. The method of analysis adopted is the 'entitlement approach', which concentrates on ownership and exchange.
After introducing the 'entitlement approach' to starvation analysis, the author examines problems of conceptualizing and measuring poverty, and discusses the specific problem of starvation in general terms. He then analyses the 'entitlement approach' in detail and applies it to four case studies of famines from different parts of the world. In the final chapter he looks at general issues of deprivation related to entitlement systems.
