  • Description
Must we always repay our debts? Wasn’t money invented to replace ancient barter systems?Apparently not, according to Yale-bred anthropologist David Graeber. In a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom, Graeber radically challenges our understanding of debt. He illustrates how, for more than 5000 years—long before the invention of coins or bills—there existed debtors and creditors who used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods. He argues that Madagascar was held to be indebted to France because France invaded it, reminds us that texts from Vedic India included God in credit systems and shows how the dollar changed European society forever in the sixteenth century. He also brilliantly demonstrates how words like ‘guilt’, ‘sin’ and ‘redemption’ derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. Debt: The First 5000 Years is a fascinating chronicle of this little known history—of how it has defined the evolution of human society, and what it means for the credit crisis of the present day and the future of our economy.

Magnum Opus on the Nature of Debt

David Graeber's (DG) magnificent work is, somewhat prohibitively titled "Debt". In fact the book provides an excellent coverage of history money, markets, role of states, practices in early societies and of course- debt. It's no secret that Modern Economics, a myth / fiction long celebrated by non-intellectuals (i.e. all neoclassical economists, especially those who've recently "won" Nobel prizes), is based on false assumptions, shaky foundations, religious zealotry and bears almost no resemb...

Debt : The First 5000 years or an alternate history of money

A difficult book to read --in the sense that it has to be read two or three times for all implications to be fully absorbed. Yet it is a rewarding read --since it gives very cogent arguments for
    (1) Putting Adam Smith in perspective: The myth of the rational "utility" calculating man has been debunked by many scholars-- some even getting the Nobel Prize for their work on behavioural economics;not many have challenged Smith's views on Markets vs. Government and even fewer have so clearly s...

Most engaging book on history of Debt

I have a very hazy understanding of the world of Finance but this book was a real eye-opener. In the vein of The Ascent of Money this is a highly informed author's views on everything that is Debt and money. A very easy read for both financial and non-financial pros.
