  • Description
As a young boy, Amitav Ghosh's narrator travels across time through the tales of those around him, traversing the unreliable planes of memory, unmindful of physical, political and chronological borders. But as he grows older, he is haunted by a seemingly random act of violence. Bits and pieces of stories, both half-remembered and imagined, come together in his mind until he arrives at an intricate, interconnected picture of the world where borders and boundaries mean nothing, mere shadow lines that we draw dividing people and nations. Out of a complex web of memories, relationships and images, Amitav Ghosh builds an intensely vivid, funny and moving story. Exposing the idea of the nation state as an illusion, an arbitrary dissection of people, Ghosh depicts the absurd manner in which your home can suddenly become your enemy.

    Easily his best work

I started reading Ghosh with 'The Glass Palace' and that remained my favourite among his works - The Calcutta Chromosome (brilliant work too!), Sea of Poppies and The Hungry Tide. Until I read 'The Shadow Lines'.

It reads beautifully, like any Amitav Ghosh work. When it comes to using language, he is easily one of the best. Unlike most of his other works, there is much less research as such that has gone in. So he basically plays with different kinds of people - right up his alley being an ...

Amitav Ghosh, the God of Literature.

A moving account of a Bengali family visiting Dhaka in Bangladesh during the times of India’s partition with Bangladesh, Second World War events, and the communal riots in the early 1960s. A thoroughly researched book by one of the greatest of great writers I have ever read. The novel won a Sahitya Akademi Award for its portrayal of the great events of the time.

Great story, great story telling. Hats off to Amitav Ghosh

A series of inter-weaving stories transgressing epochs and national borders, moving in and out of imaginations and visions of reality, concludes to finish an amazing tale. It has a pretty good narration and graphic description of almost everything from places to emotions. In particular the story is pretty amazing in itself but the way he unfolds the story makes it even more engrossing. Hats off to Amitav Ghosh.

An absolutely amazing book. Slightly monotonous at times, but beautiful. The language is lovely and picturesque. I ended the book with a contented sigh and smile on my lips. Perfect for old Kolkata lovers.

    A Good Read

It was really irritating when even after reading half of the book unable make sense of the time, space and the characters and their inter-relation. Thought of dropping it...didn't do that as it has been awarded with Sahitya academy award (So felt it must have something in it). Ultimately perseverance paid. Now after reading it, i'm feeling like going through it once again.
Its a non-linear narration involving complex web of events that happen in London, Calcutta and Dhaka during pre-partition...
