Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon, always believed only in things that could be proven. As a medical man, he needed evidence before he could convince himself of something. He had heard of Near Death Experiences (NDE), but he believed that they were hallucinations created by the brain.

He had never been an especially religious man and did not think too much about what came after death. Until, in 2008, he was affected by a bacterial infection. It affected the functioning of his brain and his body began to shut down and he slipped into a coma.
