    NiMH Batteries - Striving to Maximize

    One of the most important modern technologies that we’ve taken for granted is the rechargeable battery. Many of our electronic devices would not be able to work without NiMH batteries. The lead-acid model battery invented in 1859 by Gaston Plante is the first battery that could be recharged by running an electrical current back into it. An amazing advantage of the lead acid battery is that the reaction can be reversed by passing a reverse current through it, essentially recharging the battery.

    The first rechargeable lithium-ion batteries were created in 1985 and commercialized in 1991. Lithium-ion batteries use a complex mix of materials. While the cathode is made up of lithium molecules trapped within other compounds, the anode is usually graphite or a mix of carbon and other compounds. These batteries are used in mobile devices because they can old higher charge and have a very low discharge rate. 

    The number of portable battery operated electronic devices has grown tremendously over the last few years. The NiMH battery was patented by Stanford Ovshinsky in 1986. They are widely used till today in high voltage automotive applications. Devices that require large amounts of energy and are used very frequently are well matched to the performance characteristics of NiMH batteries. The latest NiMH AA batteries provide approximately 75% of the capacity of alkaline AA batteries. Another great advantage of NiMH batteries is that they are rechargeable. NiMH rechargeable batteries are almost equal to hundreds of alkaline batteries over their lifetime and hence prove to be a cost-effective power source for battery operated devices used frequently in home or office. These batteries eliminate the constraints on battery manufacture, usage, and disposal because of concerns over cadmium toxicity. 

    NiMH battery packs are currently finding widespread application in high-end portable electronic products where battery performance parameters like runtime are one of the major considerations in the purchase decision. If you have multiple gadgets using a NiMH battery, you can use a single pack to power all of them. Since NiMH uses standard sizes, the batteries are compatible will all devices that use sizes like AAA battery or AA battery. NiMH batteries have a lot less active materials when compared to Lithium-ion batteries. Though they can pop if overcharged too much, Lithium-ion batteries can potentially blow up.  

    NiMH cells are often used in digital cameras and other high-drain devices, mainly because they outperform primary batteries like alkaline batteries. They have a lower internal resistance and this makes sure that they deliver high current levels without heavy loss of capacity.
