    Watching Tagore

As a student of literature I am quite familiar RN Tagore’s name whose reputation is surpassed only by his skill. I can’t read Bengali but I’ve relished reading his translated works and have grown to respect his ingenuity and skill. This book, however, given the mass of pictures it puts on display, opened Tagore’s world in a much wider spectrum than what was available to me before. His work, now contextualized in my mind, reveals deeper layers of meaning and symbolism than I’d noticed when I r...

    Priceless

I’m not into literature that much. I prefer being out of doors and on the go. So I’ve never read Tagore’s poetry or prose any more that what was prescribed at school. But when I saw this Pictorial Biography I had to pick it up because…well it’s got pictures and pictures speak better to me than words. And I wasn’t disappointed. The pics are High-def and stunning and seeing the man at work is a treat by itself. I was inspired by them, so I can only imagine how those who’re familiar with his wor...

    priceless possession

The author colourfully displays his sources as he tells the story of Tagore’s crowded life, in order to “fill in some gaps”. This reads like a story and pays particular attention to Tagore’s political concerns and to his travels West and East. Facts usually found dispersed are often thematically linked together, such as the years he spent as editor of different periodicals. The book chronicles incidents, anecdotes and issues that are no less important in one’s life than the analysis of one’s ...

    Gurudeb!

Being born in an orthodox Bengali family, Rabindranath Tagore or as we bongs call him Rabindranath Thakur, was a major influence in my early childhood. His poems, both original and translated, were ritualistically recited and read in the family ever so often and us children were encouraged to recite or sing them on stage at the yearly Durga Puja celebration. So when I brought home this book. The whole family, especially the elders went completely bonkers over it. They read and quoted passages...
