Palanquin is a covered box-shaped vehicle without wheel and formerly used in eastern part of Asia for one person on the shoulder of men by means of poles. There is still a custom in India of carrying a bride in a Palanquin by the palanquin bearers and the bearers express their joy and pride by singing along the way while carrying a newlywed bride to her house. The Palanquin, popularly known as ‘Palki’, can be traced back to teh age of Ramayana. Palanquin appeared in ancient Egyptian paintings and were used by the Persians and the Romans also. This showpiece comes in golden color with antique finish and 100% handmade using the lost-wax casting technique. The charming folk motifs of Dhokra are fashioned from brass and copper based alloys using this old technique. There are two main processes of lost wax casting – solid casting and hollow casting. Hollow casting is the conventional method and it is popular in the eastern part of India. The artisans of Dhokra art are mainly based of Bankura and Bardhaman district of West Bengal. This type of metal casting or lost wax casting has been used in India for over 4000 years.
