And What Remains In The End: The Memoirs Of An Unrepentant Civil Servant by Robin Gupta is a personal account of the evolution of India as it developed over the course of forty years, told through the eyes of an ex-civil servant.

    Summary Of The Book

In And What Remains In The End: The Memoirs Of An Unrepentant Civil Servant, author Robin Gupta provides readers with the socio-historical and economic developments that have occurred in India over the last four decades. Gupta’s memoir provides a rich account about a country that is progressive and the people who have dedicated themselves to serving India. It is a sensitive, historical, and philosophical account, of India’s growth as a nation, and the major role played by Indian civil servants in advancing it.

Written in an autobiographical style, Gupta who is an ex-civil servant served four Indian provinces, including Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, and Punjab. He also had a lengthy deputation period with Central Government, playing an active and vital role in Indian politics and governance. Since his duty as a civil servant required him to make frequent travels, he had the opportunity to travel across all of India, and other countriesaround the world.

Gupta also talks candidly about his participation in policy-making in the 36 years of his service, and also about policy development, working alongside politicians and in isolation, encountering individuals who were both concerned and apathetic, and the experience of having to traverse numerous bureaucratic channels. The memoir succeeds in leaving a legacy for younger Indians, forcing them to expand their horizons and think about how best they can serve their nation.

And What Remains In The End: The Memoirs Of An Unrepentant Civil Servant was published in 2013 by Rupa Publications.

Self congratulatiory account of a desultory bureaucrat!

Although I guess while reviewing the book the message behind the book should not be the only criteria, but I guess after just crossing half way through this book, one cannot help being queasy and slightly angered.
The writing style is reasonably ok, but the way the author tries to potray himself as an elite, with a natural proclivity towards "finer things" in life, by unneccesary trying to highlight his family's connections with the British elite, his mother's liking for all things Non-Indian...

what remains in the end is an elitist ias with his glass of whisky

people like gupta are the reason why ias is called 'elitist'--coming from a privileged background whose mother felt 'london is the place to live in' and whose sister has spent her adult life in usa, one can easily see where gupta is coming from.
in many instances throughout the book it is clear how ignorant gupta had been to local issues and how often he would frequent clubs and the rich instead of focussing on grassroot realities. he looks upon ias from underprivileged backgrounds to be infe...

    Somewhat short of expectations

The book is a really good effort and it does offer great insight into the workings of the Indian bureaucracy and is well worth a read for that. The only grudge against it would be that it fails to retain the pace towards the end.
