  • Description
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, India stood on the brink of an exciting new era. Yet only a decade later, a series of corruption scandals and acts of violence against women had tarnished the nation's image and slowed her economic growth. When Narendra Modi became India's fifteenth prime minister in May 2014, he promised to revitalise a nation which seemed to have lost its way. With a record turnout, the elections were a powerful testament to Indians' aspirations for a brighter future. Rogue Elephant uncovers the gripping struggle between powerful vested interest groups and those trying to foster change. Simon Denyer exposes the failures that undermined India's self-confidence and paved the way for Modi's triumphant victory, but also examines the heroic efforts of those who are fighting for a better future in the world's largest democracy.

Not what it is hyped up to be

This book has been unnecessarily hyped. It is common reportage, meant to inform people whose knowledge of India is particularly superficial.
It might be of use to someone travelling to India to get an overview. But as a serious critique, it falls way short.
I think modern India deserves better than this.

    An intriguing and fascinating read!

Simon Denyer leaves no stone unturned while getting to the heart of India's prickliest issues. The author raises an eyebrow with a sympathetic report of a system in decline. In a country where politicians are treated like gods, the author brings out the reality. The book is a startling candour.

Some highlights of the book include, “Headline Hustler” on Arnab Goswami, Arvind Kejriwal “a flawed hero of modern India” and accounts on the struggles of the marginalised sections - on Irom Sharmila...

    Impressive, a riveting read!

I bought this book after I read a review in India Today. This lines from the review really caught my attention 'The usual haunts of the headline-hunting foreign correspondent, you would imagine? The garden variety reporter who is trying to make sense of the chaos that is India? Rogue Elephant becomes more than that when Denyer listens carefully to what India is telling him.' The reviewer couldn't have put it better. This book will go a long way!
