  • Description

Rabindranath Tagore Selected Essays is a collection Tagore’s most acclaimed essays. Creative Unity (1922) contains some of Tagore’s finest writings in English, revealing his fundamental tenets on art, aesthetics, life and religion. The essays in Sadhana (1913) explore the poet’s interpretation of the ancient spirit of India as it is manifested in the sacred texts as well as daily life. Personality (1917) is a finely structured exposition of Tagore’s spiritual thought, while Nationalism in India (1917) offers his vision of a society independent of the existing models of the nation-state in the East and West. Essays from Crisis in Civilization (Sabhyatar Samrat), Tagore’s last public address, delivered in 1941; The Religion of Man (1941) and Greater India (1921) which explores the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, are also included.

    About the Author
One of India’s most cherished figures, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1914) was a novelist, short-story writer, poet, essayist, painter, educationist and thinker, the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. He modernised Bengali literature, moving it away from its rigid classical form and strict linguistic structure. Known for works such as Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World,) his novels, short stories and verse are considered part of the greatest of world literature, famous for their exploration of the political and the personal. He also wrote the national anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana, and of Bangladesh, Amar Shonar Bangla.
