Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He earned his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. For a while, he worked as a doctor onboard ships. Later, he set up private practice in Southsea. While waiting for the practice to pick up, he started writing stories. His first major published work was A Study In Scarlet. The character of Sherlock Holmes became popular and Doyle continued to write many stories featuring the famous detective. He also wrote science fiction novels featuring another recurring character, Professor Challenger. He also wrote some historical novels, and other short stories not featuring his famous characters.
