  • Description

Siddhartha is an allegorical novel written by the Nobel Laureate, Hermann Hesse. It deals with the spiritual journey of an Indian boy called Siddhartha during the time of the Buddha.

    Summary of the Book

This title was originally written in German, in a simple, yet powerful and lyrical style. It was first published in the year 1922 after Hesse had spent some time in India in the 1910s. The story revolves around a young Indian man who leaves his home and family in search for meaning and truth. The spiritual quest takes him from the austerities of renunciation to the profligacy of prosperity. It makes him experience a wide range of human experiences - from hunger and want to passion, pleasure, pain, greed, yearning, boredom, love, despair and hope. The journey ultimately leads him to the river, where he gains peace and eventually wisdom.

    About Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse was a German-born Swiss poet and author, best known for writing the novels Steppenwolf, Siddhartha (the current title), and The Glass Bead Game. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. His themes focus on man's struggle to break away from the rigid structures of civilisation and follow his essential and inner spirit. For this, Hesse became a literary cult figure.

    • Hermann Hesse (1877 -1962) was one of the great literary figures of the twentieth century. Born in Calw to a Protestant family, he rebelled against the classical education that he received in Swabian monastery schools. Hesse began working as a locksmith and a bookseller, and later took to writing as a profession. Settled in Switzerland, he travelled extensively, including India. Politically, Hesse was opposed to German militarism, for which he was condemed by the Nazi government. In recognition of his contribution to literature, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946. His other classic works include Der Steppenwolf and The Glass Bead Game.

    Terrific purchase

Truly a life changing one. Inner thoughts of a brahmin are best depicted here. For the protagonist his feelings are his knowledge with which he moves on. He dares to deny the illustrious Budha. He believes time is only an illusion and there is no such thing and he wipes out the descrimination between virtue and evil, truth and lie, saint and thief and so on. I would like to tell you that read it only if you are seeking meaning our existance. Otherwise don't go behind it as you may find it awk...

This book is about a man in search of wisdom, salvation, peace, enlightment. The last portions are really interesting and thought provoking. Really enjoyed this. It has the answers to some questions which can only be answered by wise men. The quality of the paper is good and the book is hardbound. Really a good read.

    Mind-blowing purchase

This review is about the condition of book since i have not read it yet.
After buying so many books from flipkart this one is totally unexpected. The book looks way better than what is shown in the pics above.
If you remove the outer cover there is solid dark black hard cover with nothing written on front which makes it look like a nice diary.
And on sides is written the name of this book and it's writer name in glittering golden color.
Quality of page is also nice.packing was in a huge bo...

    Value-for-money

I didn't find it much useful. Still few things are in this book to learn. The best line is "I can think, I can wait and I can fast". Also, we as a person cannot escape from the reality, we must accept and move with the flow of nature.
