  • Description
From bestselling author of Fermat's Last Theorem, a must-have for number lovers and Simpsons fans 'An entertaining picture of the insanely high-minded nature of the Simpsons' writers' Sunday Times 'A valuable, entertaining book that, above all, celebrates a supremely funny, sophisticated show' Financial Times You may have watched hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons (and its sister show Futurama) without ever realising that they contain enough maths to form an entire university course. In The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets, Simon Singh explains how the brilliant writers, some of the mathematicians, have smuggled in mathematical jokes throughout the cartoon's twenty-five year history, exploring everything from to Mersenne primes, from Euler's equation to the unsolved riddle of P vs. NP, from perfect numbers to narcissistic numbers, and much more. With wit, clarity and a true fan's zeal, Singh analyses such memorable episodes as 'Bart the Genius' and 'Homer (3)' to offer an entirely new insight into the most successful show in television history.

    Very under-rated

Simon Singh, unfortunately, does not receive as much credit as he deserves. He has this brilliant ability to simplify complicated theories and embellish it so that a regular impatient reader might find it interesting and worth-while. He is spreading knowledge cunningly disguised under entertainment. The book is quite engaging and I suggest every Simpsons and Futurama fan should read it. It should become a prerequisite to calling yourself a 'fan' as without it, we truly cannot comprehend and ...

Great Title for lovers of Mathematics and The Simpsons...

I was interested to know that the Simpsons are much more about mathematics than they appear, although we have all experienced it once in a while, but nobody actually pinpoint that fact to us, all the while focussing on the creators "Knurd-y" background. The book appears to have more average american cliches than the Simpsons, and being an Indian, I could relate to the Simpsons better than I could with a few chapters of the book. I was attracted to the 'Indian sounding name' of the author, but...
