Sister of my Heart is the tale which reveals the love that can be shared between two individuals who have stood by each other’s side since birth. The story goes on to tell us about the difficulties that they face throughout their lives.

Summary of the Book

The book describes the undying love between the protagonists Anju and Sudha. Their mothers were pregnant when Sudha’s father suggested to Anju’s father that they go fishing. An accident during the time resulted in the death of Anju’s father. Sudha has always felt and thought of it as her fault that Anju does not have a father because of the fishing incident. Both their mothers went into early labour after the death of their husbands and Anju was born first. As soon as she was born, she was kept on the stomach of Sudha’s mother so the delivery was quick and safe. This leads Anju to think of Sudha as her responsibility as she was the reason for her coming into this world. The book is mostly about their struggles in life like memories of their fathers, arranged marriages, abortion, pregnancy and separation.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an Indian-American author and poet. She is also the Professor of Writing at the University of Houston. She has authored Mistress of Spices and a collection of short stories called Arranged Marriage which won an American Book Award in 1995.
