  • Description

Published in 1998, Sarah Dessen’s Someone Like You revolves around the characters of Halley and Scarlett. Having been best friends for years, Halley and Scarlett’s relationship is put to the test when a series of events leads to Scarlett’s boyfriend being killed in an accident. Scarlett, in the meantime, is pregnant with his baby.

    Summary of The Book

Halley and Scarlett live in opposite houses, and have been best friends for a long time. At school, it is Scarlett who is regarded as the more flamboyant of the two, with Halley being regarded as the quiet sidekick. Scarlett and Michael Sherwood start dating, but only Halley knows of this. The couple lie low about their relationship because of Michael’s recent break-up with a cheerleader called Elizabeth Gunderson.

Halley, against her wishes, is sent to the Sisterhood Camp during the final few days of her summer vacation by her mother. Her mother grows increasingly uncomfortable with Halley’s changes as she grows up. However, Halley is called back by Scarlett, who calls her best friend to tell her of Michael’s accidental death.

Following Michael’s death, Scarlett reveals to Halley that she is pregnant. Initially opting for an abortion, Scarlett decides against it at the very last minute, and decides to have the baby. In the meantime, drastic changes enter Halley’s life, as she gets attracted to Macon Faulkner, who was Michael’s best friend. Her relationship with the secretive Macon Faulkner goes through several twists and turns, as Halley begins to think of how she has changed as a person over time. The relationship between them also goes on to create a rift between her and Scarlett, leaving it to the strength of their friendship to decide their fates.
