A 7-speed cassette or freewheel is a cluster of seven sprockets mounted on the rear hub of a bicycle. It allows the rider to shift between seven different gear ratios, making it easier to adapt to various terrains—whether climbing hills or riding on flat roads. The cassette works with a compatible rear derailleur to move the chain smoothly from one cog to another. While both cassettes and freewheels look similar, they differ in mounting mechanisms: freewheels have an integrated ratcheting system, while cassettes require a separate freehub body. Commonly found on entry- to mid-level geared bikes, 7-speed systems offer reliable performance and ease of maintenance.
