  • Description
Pointing to the horizon where the sea and sky are joined, he says, 'It is only an illusion because they can't really meet, but isn't it beautiful, this union which isn't really there.' -- SAADAT HASAN MANTO Sometime in 2016, a series of dialogues took place which set out to find a meeting ground, even if only an illusion, between A.S. Dulat and Asad Durrani. One was a former chief of RAW, India's external intelligence agency, the other of ISI, its Pakistani counterpart. As they could not meet in their home countries, the conversations, guided by journalist Aditya Sinha, took place in cities like Istanbul, Bangkok and Kathmandu. On the table were subjects that have long haunted South Asia, flashpoints that take lives regularly. It was in all ways a deep dive into the politics of the subcontinent, as seen through the eyes of two spymasters. Among the subjects: Kashmir, and a missed opportunity for peace; Hafiz Saeed and 26/11; Kulbhushan Jadhav; surgical strikes; the deal for Osama bin Laden; how the US and Russia feature in the India-Pakistan relationship; and how terror undermines the two countries' attempts at talks. When the project was first mooted, General Durrani laughed and said nobody would believe it even if it was written as fiction. At a time of fraught relations, this unlikely dialogue between two former spy chiefs from opposite sides--a project that is the first of its kind--may well provide some answers.

    • Amarjit Singh Dulat is a former head of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India's external intelligence agency. After retirement, he was appointed adviser on Kashmir in the Prime Minister's Office and served there from January 2001 to May 2004. During this time, he accumulated a vast reservoir of goodwill with Kashmiris of all shades. As Jane's Intelligence Digest put it in 2001, ‘Well known for his social skills, Dulat preferred dialogue to clandestine maneouvres.' In his heyday, Dulat was referred to as ‘Mr Kashmir'. Dulat was born in Sialkot, Punjab, in December 1940. After India's partition, his father Justice Shamsher Singh Dulat relocated his family to Delhi. After schooling in Delhi, Simla and Chandigarh, Dulat joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1965, and then the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in 1969, where he served for almost thirty years. At the IB he headed the Kashmir Group during the turbulent 1990s till he joined and headed the R&AW. He is the author of Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years (2015; co-authored with Aditya Sinha), The Spy Chronicles: R&AW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace (2018; co-authored with Lieutenant General Asad Durrani and Aditya Sinha) and A Life in the Shadows (2022).

    Does the job

Just completed reading this book. This is nothing but reproduction of conversation, verbatim between two chief's of ISI and RAW. Any person who is not aware of incidents which happened many years back will find it difficult to understand. Better would have been that explanation given in bracket to understand what they are talking. I felt like skipping the book many times as it was very boring. Overall this book is good for those who want to understand the point of view of two persons from two...

    Warning: Only Scratches the Surface

This book gives an account of certain things that the ISI and RAW have done and how good they are. What these guys is say is already out in Public. Gives account of kashmir situation and how we can deal with peace etc. India vs Pakistan.
Most times both sides wont admit a lot of things as thats how the network works anyway.
There is a book called Kashmir: The vajpayee years written by Mr. A.S Dulat. Might want to read that before reading this to understand a lot of terms.

    Brilliant

The book is really a creation worth remembering. It is revising history of Kashmir with the Interpol and RA&W interference.ISI is somewhat competing with RAW but has failed in kashmir analysis.Osama bin laden's death phenomenon is revised with Dr.Afridi's name in focuse. All these things are somehow confidential but still publicised, this is worth a daring thing.
This will encourage youngsters to join RAW and analysing the terrorism in candid way.
