Summary Of The Book
The basic aim of surveying is to help prepare a map showing the relative positions of various objects on the surface of the earth. These objects include natural features, as well as engineering works. Surveying can be used to prepare topographical, engineering, military, geological, archaeological, and other maps.
Surveying And Levelling is a comprehensive book, which covers the different types of surveying techniques, and their field procedures, in a very systematic way.
The introduction to the book begins with the definitions of surveying and levelling, and goes on to give the object, uses, classification, principles of surveying, and the various accessories for measurement. This is followed by 14 chapters. The second chapter, Chain Surveying, deals with chain surveying in a comprehensive manner. Principles of chain surveying, definitions and illustrations, equipments for chain survey, procedures for field work and plotting, are some of the topics covered in the chapter.
This is followed by chapters on Plane Table Surveying, Compass Traversing, and Contouring. The chapter Levelling includes object and use of levelling, types of levels, and difficulties in levelling. The other chapters in the book include Computation of Volume and Computation of Area. The chapter titled Curves gives the explanation and the definition of different terms, types and properties of curves. The entire chapter, Project Surveys, has been devoted to project surveys. Surveys of harbours, airports, and tunneling, have all been included. Hydrographic Survey and Tacheometric Surveying are some of the other chapters in the book. These chapters are followed by Model Questions With Answers.
Each chapter ends with short questions, with answers, which have been included specifically for the vivas. There are also exercises with objective questions, with answers. These have been included to help students who want to attempt the competitive exams. The book also includes questions that have been included in recent examinations all over India.
The number of solved examples and detailed illustrations, help the students understand the topics better. The user-friendly and simple style of the book makes it easier for the students to understand the subject.

N. N. Basak is a teacher of field surveying at the Malda Polytechnic.
Basak has also written Irrigation Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
Basak is a diploma graduate and also holds an AMIE. Before entering the teaching profession, he worked with the West Bengal Irrigation Department, and later worked as a supervisor with the Central Water and Power Commission. During his stint with the Central Water and Power Commission, he conducted several surveys for the Ganga-Brahmaputra Navigation cum Irrigation Project.
