In many Hindu texts including Bhagwat Purana, Lord Vishnu is described as incarnating on earth for the protection of dharma(righteousness) and destruction of unrighteousness. The number of these incarnations is considered to be ten, some of the prominent incarnations are Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (half man, half lion), Vaman (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Balram and Kalki. Through these incarnations, Lord Vishnu has protected dharma, protected the devotees, and destroyed the unrighteous.
