The book has tales about Birbal, a commoner who with his amazing satire, who becomes King Akbar's most favorite minister. Birbal The Witty is set during Birbal's trip to a troubled Afghanistan. He is sent there by the emperor to take care of some grave issue when suddenly in a gripping twist, news of Birbal's death starts to make its rounds in the town. Just when a terrified Akbar feels as if he has lost a part of himself, the truth emerges and amazes both the ruler and the readers, leaving everyone in splits. Birbal The Just reveals a different side of the able minister, as he puts to use his somewhat unorthodox ways to ensure justice is served in the great Mughal's court.
Another tale is of a humorous poet turned minister in the court of the famous ruler Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara dynasty. Tenali Raman was well known for his astonishing ability to win tough situations and arguments against all odds using his uncanny wit. Raman: The Matchless Wit is a story of how, using just his incredible drollery and a bunch of sesame stems, Raman cleverly saves the day when some greedy priests plan on fleecing the King in the context of his mother's funeral. And in Raman Of Tenali, the author accounts the hilarious incident where Raman teaches the audacious royal tutor a lesson and at the same time, has the whole court amused. Gopal The Jester, is a story involving Gopal Bhand who was a jester at a small province in Bengal and how he uses his quick-witted flair to make his way out of a tricky situation.
About Anant Pai
Anant Pai is an Indian children’s writer and educationist.
Little Raji, How To Develop A Super Memory, and How To Develop Self-Confidence are some of his other works.
Pai was born in 1929 in Karkala, Karnataka. He attended the University of Bombay, from where he obtained 2 degrees. He soon took to writing and landed a job at The Times of India. Best known for his sensational teen comic Tinkle and mythological comic Amar Chitra Katha, he became famous among children as Uncle Pai. He received various awards including Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation's Award and the Vishwa Saraswat Sammaan. Pai succumbed to a massive heart attack and passed away in the year 2011.
