Author Info
Information gathering and giving are the fundamental skills required for safe clinical practice. We have included a separate chapter on communication skills focusing on initiation of patient centred consultation based on Cambridge-Calgary model. We believe this will provide a framework for developing good communication skills particularly for overseas candidates who practices medicine in a different socio-cultural environment. We have endeavoured to cover the curriculum as widely as possible to give a flavour of this examination. We must stress that the candidates should be up-to-date with the most recently published guidelines published by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Self-assessment is an important tool for the preparation of any examinations. Immediate peer feedback to the candidate will help to hone skills required to be successful in clinical tasks.

Preface : In the UK the MRCOG exam is the exit examination from intermediate training. The aim of the examination is to assess core competencies in knowledge, skills, and attitudes as defined in the curriculum. The clinical assessment tasks part of Part 2 is uncoupled and is introduced as a standalone new Part 3 clinical assessment examination. The MRCOG is an UK exam taken globally. In many countries MRCOG exam is considered as a specialist qualification and a licence to independent specialist practice. In our day-to-day medicine we seldom practise pure science but applied knowledge relevant to a clinical context. Diseases and illnesses have to be viewed in the societal context and therefore methods of assessment for competencies reflect the cultural and organisational nuances of society. The new Part 3 clinical assessment aims to assess candidates’ ability to apply core knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to the day to day UK clinical practice.
