Summary Of The Book

The Descendants is a book based on the life of a highly successful man from Hawaii, named Matthew King. His forefathers were missionaries and were financially sound. After marrying a Hawaiian princess, Matthew becomes one of the wealthiest men around and one of the state’s largest landowners.

Suddenly, things take a turn for the worse when his daughters get out of control. His ten-year old daughter Scottie is a die-hard attention seeker. His other daughter, Alex, is a seventeen-year old former model and recovering drug addict. Matthew’s wife, Joanie, is in a coma after a boat racing accident and she is now on the verge of being taken off life support.

As they come to terms with Joanie’s impending departure from the world, Matt begins to inform all her friends and family. However, they find out that they have missed out on informing one person, who holds a special place in Joanie’s heart. Matt and his two daughters set out on a journey to find this mystery man, but Joanie might not survive long enough for them to return with him.

The Descendants has been greatly appreciated by its readers and has even landed on the New York Times Bestsellers list. It has been sold in more than 20 countries and has also been adapted into an Oscar-winning movie, directed by Alexander Payne.

About Kaui Hart Hemmings

The author of this book, Kaui Hart Hemmings, is a writer from Hawaii. She has another published work titled House Of Thieves, which is a collection of stories. Hemmings was born and brought up on the Hawaiian island. She completed her degree from Sarah Lawrence College and studied further at Colorado College. Hemming was also a Wallace Stegner Fellow and is regarded as the youngest writer to make it at the Grotto, which is a premier writing collective based in San Francisco.
