It is considered the first full-length detective story written by a woman. The novel is set in New York City and tells the story of the murder of a wealthy man, Horatio Leavenworth. Leavenworth is found dead in his study, and the evidence suggests that he was shot by one of his two nieces, Mary or Eleanore. Everett Raymond, a young lawyer, is hired by Leavenworth's family to defend the nieces. Raymond is convinced that one of the nieces is innocent, but he must figure out who it is and prove their innocence. He is aided in his investigation by Ebenezer Gryce, a shrewd and experienced detective. Raymond and Gryce interview the nieces and the other people who were present in the house on the night of the murder. They also examine the crime scene and the evidence. As they investigate, they uncover a web of secrets and lies. In the end, Raymond and Gryce are able to solve the case and bring the murderer to justice. The novel is a suspenseful and well-written detective story. Green's characters are complex and believable, and her plot is full of twists and turns.
