After finishing this book, I was left awed by the vastness of this wonderful work of literature. It takes you for a journey for a time spanned more than 100 years, through some exquisitely portrayed characters, in the mystique place, Burma. Amazing read. Finished reading the book a week back, yet a part of me still feels as if it is lingering amid the Malayan rubber plantations. A very very engaging tale; a multitude of views on the state and occurrences of a tumultuous time. I loved the unbiased, yet sympathetic manner in which each character and associated perspective is dished out. This is my first read of Amitava Ghosh and I am Hungry for more.

This is one book that i needed to savor and think about when i finished it, for atleast a while. The characterization and the landscaping is so rich, connected and overwhelming, that the losses struck me as mine own, and the celebrations as my own joys.

This book takes you to an interesting journey. The story is so pictorial that you actually imagine the scene happening in front of you. My best section was the how the palace was raided and the elephant forced to death.....such gripping novel, quick paced and very smartly knitted. I am now a big fan of Amitav Ghosh

In the era of Hinglish, this book gives pure unadulterated flavour of English. A must read for people who understand and appreciate language in its purity. The backdrop of the plot is nostalgic, especially for a person like me who is familiar with both Konkani and Myanmar culture.
