  • Description
Translated by Constance Garnett, with an Introduction and Notes by Agnes Cardinal, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature at the University of Kent. Prince Myshkin returns to Russia from an asylum in Switzerland. As he becomes embroiled in the frantic amatory and financial intrigues which centre around a cast of brilliantly realised characters and which ultimately lead to tragedy, he emerges as a unique combination of the Christian ideal of perfection and Dostoevsky's own views, afflictions and manners. His serene selflessness is contrasted with the worldly qualities of every other character in the novel. Dostoevsky supplies a harsh indictment of the Russian ruling class of his day who have created a world which cannot accomodate the goodness of this idiot.

    The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky

This particular book is really value for money, at such a moderate price we get to read what is probably one of Dostoevsky's masterpiece.

The story goes as Prince Myshkin our story's protagonist is a Christ like character and at the same time child like innocent in what Dostoevsky depicts as an unchristian world corroded by moral corruption and spiritual desolation. Amidst these situations Myshkin helps everyone he meets and always holds the needs of others above his own. Later we see how h...

    Nice psychology

People who don't like articulate ways of writing don't buy this book. But omnivorous like me who like reading almost everything (Except mobile bills of course) will love this book. Author is a psychologist. He is a master in psychiatry. Other than only Russian names could be a small hurdle initially other than that it is a nice work.
    Printing quality is not bad.

    An absolute masterpiece

I was cajoled into reading this by one of my friends and I have thanked him umpteen times since then. Regarded as one of the best and most important works in nineteenth century literature, this has to rank amongst the best in Dostoyevski's oeuvre. In this work of his, he portrays a truly beautiful soul through the protagonist,Prince Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin, an epileptic considered by others as an Idiot lacking common sense and basic savoir-faire. The novel explores the problems such a simple...

    Elegant

Few captivating quotes from The Idiot:

The soul is cured by being with children.
Nothing should be hidden from children.
    Beauty is a riddle.
Grace and dignity are taught by the heart not by dancing teachers.

I loved the book, especially the starting part. Having read most of the work from the author, I feel The Idiot is little under rated as compared to his other works, which should not be so. It is a great novel. I came across some of the best quotes while reading this book.

A tale of simpler times and simpler men

This is a tale of certain Prince Myshkin. He is a very simple guy with simple mind and manner. He is true upright man without any malice in his heart. He always likes to do good deed and help others.

This behavior of his cause him to be ridiculed in the society. However, when he inherits a large amount of money perception of society towards him changes. This is tale of self destruction of a man due to his simplicity and naivety. It also deals in detail about the hypocrisy within society. Lik...
