The Inscrutable Americans is based on the story of a naive Indian student Gopal, who goes to the United States of America to pursue his education in a university there. The book depicts how he explores the new foreign land and about how he matures after experiencing adventurous encounters.

    Summary Of The Book

The Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur is the story of a naive Indian boy in the United States of America who finds everything bewildering, but happens to get influenced and later finds himself enjoying and getting absorbed in the American culture. In short, it’s the story of an alien in a new foreign land.

Gopal Kumar, who hails from an affluent family who have been running a hair oil business for many decades, travels to the United States of America to pursue his higher education. He is welcomed by his friends Sushant and Sunil. He stays at their place for a day and goes ahead to his destination, the town Eversville, where he meets his friend Randy, who introduces to him the culture and society of the new foreign land. He studies Chemical Engineering at the university in Eversville.

Every aspect of America, despite the town of Eversville being remote and tiny in size, the culture, the language, the girls, new electrical gadgets, numerous television channels, everything seemed to be amusing to him.

He realises the amount of opportunities one has at these institutions. He gets aware of the darker side of America, the poor people, and the oppressed Blacks. He soon becomes lonely during the Christmas vacation and starts missing his friends and family. Finally after the completion of his one year course, he bids adieu to America to return to his homeland, taking back with him memories of the year spend in America. And there is a turning point in his life, during his flight travel to India, when he meets the one who turns all his fantasy into reality.

    Fabulous Book!!

To be honest, i didn't know of this book till recently. I read a very funny book called Amreekandesi - Masters of America (highly recommended), and then read that Inscrutable Americans is based on the same theme, and immediately ordered it.

I must say this is one awesome book. The characters are too funny, and the situations are hilarious. Very happy to have found these two great books, both on the similar theme of how Indians behave when they land up in a US university setting.

Its an 1990's rich indian's visit to US university...life turns when he is there!

One of the greatest experience i had reading is this book. Typical Indian rich family, who sends their son to study in "videsh". Initially he was a shy Indian guy with shy, antiquated, innocent indian beliefs, but turns out to be a monster at the end in search of love and loosing his virginity(dirty american secret). With all funny and crazy incidents....its definitively worth one time read...u will surely love this guy and his "karnamay" with full of innocence.....Mr.Mathur's illustrations and...

    Woah!

I cant believe someone gave this book one star! Inscrutable Americans is BY FAR one of the funniest book (by an Indian author)I have read. It is something I keep revisiting when I'm feeling a little low are it cheers me up right away! Anurag Mathur's writing is hilarious and well timed.

I agree one could consider this slapstick and must have a stomach for occasional lewd humour, but hey, what the hell! I read to escape and what a sweet escape this is!

    Could have been better!

Good! Considering the time when it has been written.
Depiction of the character 'Gopal' is worth appreciating.
I felt it should have been much better for the Internet era youth!

1 thing that you could look for in this book is 'the letters' that Gopal writes to his brother back to India with hilarious so called 'English of an Indian'.

    interesting journey

The book provides an interesting enquiry into the ''culture shock'' that an Indian student is likely to face when he lands up in an American University. Though it is written in a jovial, comical yet sarcastical way, it convey the inherent differences in our cultures. The writer's sense of hunour is typical and unimitable. Its a must read.
The rigidity of our mindset (which sticks like the Hair Oil) and the open society which the student enters into are two poles and the new entrant finds i...

    One Pleasant Read.

I probably would remember reading this book as a great time spent. And, there are still some 20 pages left! I generally don't write reviews, but this book just deserves a great review. The writing is witty. American life given from a perspective of a small town Indian boy, a perspective an average Indian should be able to relate to. Just go for it!

    Good for starters

A light read, especially fun if you're about to go for higher education. Sensible humor, and characters that develop decently.

    Bad Choice

As mentioned in the title, it was indeed a bad choice. It was written with a heart but the flow was not maintained. The way the dots were connected was too predictable. The humour is ok. Buy it if you want to have some timepass.
