Haunted by dreams of an unforgettable loss, Rahul, a young man of thirty living in San Francisco, suddenly becomes secretive and withdraws from his partner Andrew. When Andrew discovers that Rahul is still interviewing girls sent by his parents for an arranged marriage, he hands out an ultimatum – stop living a lie, or give up their relationship. In response, Rahul tells Andrew a story.

About a boy who lived in a palace. A boy named Rahul. Set in San Francisco today and in Hyderabad in the early 1970s, My Magical Palace is a sensitive tale about a boy’s coming of age, and the many hurdles he must cross to heal and find himself.

Fantastic story with a heart and a soul

What can I say. The book took my breath away. I was charmed by the richness of the setting... with lush, natural and historic scenes in Hydrabad India of the 70's juxtaposed against the modern locations of colorful San Francisco.
I adored the character ensemble and, though the culture of the story is world's away from America, I felt right at home with each of them. Kunal Mukherjee's brilliant storytelling includes controversial and tough subjects in sexuality, religion, and society that are ...

    Magical Memories

When I first started reading "My Magical Palace", (really my daughter's copy that I "stole"), I found it so spell-binding that I nearly finished it in one sitting!! To travel back to a country that has mesmerized me since the 1960s when I first travelled there became a magical journey for me, too, albeit through the protagonist's colorful, yet painful, poignant coming-of-age experiences.

Because of my fascination and familiarity with India and both its external and internal "landscape", I f...

A courageous coming of age story

Outside Rahul's magical palace in Hyderabad, India there are lush gardens, colorful mango trees, hundreds of song birds, and invisible, on the other side of a wall, a bustling city. Inside, young Rahul lives with his his parents and sister in what seems a perfect world. But soon, Rahul's innocent childhood ends when he begins to realize he is gay. Suddenly, he is navigating the confusing and frightening world of a culturally forbidden sexuality. He knows what is expected of him: to be first i...

Amazing!! An amazing read from the first to last page!

I'm not sure why Ganguly Dibeyendu is so rude but he obviously didn't read the same book I read!
Kunal is not only an amazing author but an amazing man and friend as well! This book is so well written, you feel like you are in the movie while you read it! I could picture every piece of clothing, every tree and ever room he was talking about on every page! Sometimes I could almost smell the mangos as he described his mother preparing them!
You feel the passion in his words. Kunal can make yo...

Love, truth and everything in between

Rahul is gay and closeted. Far removed from his original home and family, he has found love in the arms of another man, Andrew. However, his ostracized past still haunts him and the fact that his affection lies for another man, remains alienated from his parents. He grapples with revealing his sexual identity to his parents and thus his lover or remaining closeted for life (his parents still send prospective brides and their families to his place), he finds himself getting separated from Andr...

    Big Dissapointment

Kunal Mukherjee's angst-rdden story of growing up a middle class Bengali family in Hyderabad, superimposed with his life in later years as a gay man in San Francisco is a dissapointment. One expected something more from a 52 year old in 2012, a year in which the gay marriage is a reality in USA. Alas, this is a book that should have been written by a 22 year old, maybe in the early 70s. The book even lacks that basic trait gay men are known for - a sense of humour. Instead we have a maudlin h...
